The short answer
Bathroom Remodeling in Woburn, MA
The bathrooms we open up in Woburn
Most Woburn homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s, and a lot of them still have the bathroom they came with, or a quick update from the 1980s or 1990s. In the capes of Cummingsville and Shakerhill and the ranches and split-levels around Montvale and Woburn Highlands, the typical starting point is a small hall bath with a tub, a pedestal or vanity sink, and tile set over old backer or even drywall.
In older houses near Central Square, Horn Pond and North Woburn, bathrooms were often added into existing rooms long after the house was built. That can mean uneven floors, undersized joists and plumbing that was rerouted more than once.
Either way, what we usually find behind the tile is the same list: soft subfloor around the toilet or tub, old galvanized or mixed plumbing, no real waterproofing behind the shower walls, and a bathroom fan that vents into the attic instead of outside.
Why we build mud-set shower pans
A curbless or walk-in shower is the most common request we get in Woburn, usually replacing an old tub. The part you never see matters most: the shower pan. We build traditional mud-set pans, a sand and cement bed floated by hand to a consistent slope toward the drain, over a proper waterproofing layer.
A hand-floated mud bed lets us set the exact slope a room needs, even when an older floor is out of level, and it gives tile a solid, flat base that does not flex. That is what keeps grout from cracking and water from finding its way into the framing below. Mud floors are one of NC Construction's specialties, and we use the same method for tiled bathroom floors.
Large-format tile and slab walls
Many Woburn homeowners want fewer grout lines: large porcelain tiles on the floor and big-format panels or slab tile on the shower walls. Large tiles look clean and are easier to keep up, but they are less forgiving. Walls have to be flat and floors have to be true, or the edges will not line up and tiles can crack.
In a 60-year-old house, that usually means straightening studs, sistering joists or adding subfloor before tile goes down. We plan that prep into the estimate so it is not a surprise halfway through.

Layouts that fit a Woburn house
Space is the real limit in most Woburn bathrooms. A typical 1950s hall bath is around five by eight feet, and a cape's upstairs bath often sits under a sloped ceiling. Small changes help a lot: a wall-hung or narrower vanity, a niche in the shower wall instead of a shelf, a pocket door where a swinging door blocks the room.
When a house has only one full bath, many owners use the remodel to add a second one, often in a finished basement or by borrowing space from a closet or a small bedroom. We look at where the plumbing stack and drain lines run before suggesting a layout, since that drives what is practical.
Moisture, ventilation and Woburn winters
Cold winters and long heating seasons make bathroom moisture a bigger problem in Woburn homes. Warm, humid air hits cold exterior walls and cape knee walls and condenses, which leads to peeling paint, mold and rot around windows. We vent fans outside, insulate exterior walls we open up, and seal around shower windows, which are common in older Woburn bathrooms.
Bathrooms are interior work, so they can be done any time of year. Winter is a good season to get on the schedule for a bathroom remodel.
Permits and how the job runs
A bathroom remodel that moves plumbing, changes wiring or touches framing usually needs permits from the City of Woburn. Plumbing and electrical permits are pulled by those licensed trades, and structural changes go through the building department. We explain what your project needs and help handle the permit process.
Nathan, the owner, is on the job, and you have one point of contact. You get a clear written estimate that lists demo, prep, pan, tile and fixtures. We contain dust, protect floors and hallways, and clean up daily, which matters in a house where you may only have one bathroom. Since we are based in Woburn, we are close by if a question comes up mid-project.
