The short answer

Siding in Woburn, MA

NC Construction is a siding contractor in Woburn, MA that installs and replaces vinyl and fiber cement clapboard siding across Massachusetts. A siding job includes removal of old siding, sheathing repair, housewrap, window and door flashing, new clapboard, corner boards and exterior trim, with a clear written estimate and the owner on site.

Siding

Siding is the part of the house everyone sees, but its real job is to shed water. The clapboard is the first layer. Behind it, housewrap and flashing around every window and door are what keep rain and melting snow out of the walls. When those layers are skipped or done wrong, rot starts where nobody can see it.

NC Construction strips old siding, repairs any damaged sheathing we find, wraps the house and flashes openings before the new siding goes on. We install vinyl and fiber cement clapboard, along with corner boards, window and door casings, frieze boards and other exterior trim that give a New England house its lines.

Nathan, the owner, is on the job and works with you on color, profile and trim details. The site is cleaned daily and the written estimate spells out exactly what is covered.

What is included

Siding, start to finish

  • Vinyl clapboard siding

Low-maintenance vinyl clapboard installed with room to expand and contract, so it stays straight through hot summers and cold winters.

  • Fiber cement clapboard

Painted or pre-finished fiber cement for a crisp, wood-like look with strong resistance to rot and impact.

  • Exterior trim

Corner boards, window and door casing, frieze and rake boards, and soffit and fascia in low-maintenance materials.

  • Housewrap and flashing

A weather-resistive barrier over the whole wall, with window and door openings flashed and taped before siding goes up.

  • Sheathing and rot repair

Rotted sheathing, sills and trim replaced once the old siding is off, so new material is not hiding old damage.

Built for New England homes

Colonials, capes and ranches around Middlesex County were built with clapboard, and the look still fits the neighborhood. Many of these homes now have a layer of aluminum or old vinyl over the original wood, sometimes with little or no wrap behind it. When we strip it, we often find water stains under windows and soft sills that have been hiding for years.

Wind-driven rain and snow in a New England winter push water into every gap in the wall. Freeze-thaw cycles then open those gaps a little wider each year. Properly lapped housewrap, flashed windows and siding that is allowed to move with the temperature are what keep the walls dry from one season to the next.

How it works

Our siding process

01

Exterior assessment

We walk the outside of the house, check for soft spots, look at window and door details and talk about material, color and profile.

02

Written estimate

You get a clear written estimate covering removal, repairs, wrap, siding and trim, so there are no surprises about what is included.

03

Strip, repair and wrap

Old siding comes off one section at a time, damaged sheathing is repaired, and housewrap and flashing go on before the walls are exposed to weather.

04

Siding, trim and cleanup

New clapboard and trim are installed, final details are sealed, and the property is cleaned. We walk the finished exterior with you.

Siding: common questions

Vinyl costs less and needs almost no upkeep. Fiber cement looks more like painted wood, is heavier and more rigid, and usually costs more to buy and install. We walk through both with you based on your house and budget.
We recommend removing the old siding. It lets us find and repair rot, install housewrap and flash windows properly, which matters more than the siding itself.
It depends on the size of the house, the material, how much trim is involved and what repairs are needed underneath. Fiber cement generally runs higher than vinyl. A free written estimate after a walkaround gives you a real number.
Most single-family homes take from several days to a couple of weeks depending on size, material, trim detail and weather. We give you a schedule with the estimate.
Many Massachusetts towns require a building permit for re-siding. We check what your town requires and help handle the process.
