The short answer

Tile, Slab Tile & Mud Set Floors in Woburn, MA

NC Construction is a tile contractor in Woburn, MA that installs large-format and slab porcelain tile, mud set floors and shower pans, shower walls and backsplashes. Mud set means tile goes on a thick, hand-floated bed of sand and cement, which gives a flatter, stronger base than thin-set over plywood, especially for big tiles.

Tile, Slab Tile & Mud Set Floors

Tile shows every shortcut. A floor that flexes cracks the grout. A base that is not flat leaves big tiles with lips you can feel with your bare feet. A shower pan with the wrong slope leaves standing water. Good tile installation is mostly about the layer underneath, and that is where we spend our time.

Large-format and slab tile has become the look people ask for most: fewer grout lines, bigger pieces and a cleaner, more modern floor or wall. Those pieces are also the least forgiving. They need a base that is almost perfectly flat and a crew that back-butters, uses leveling systems and handles heavy panels without chipping the edges.

When the floor needs it, we go old school with a mud set. Instead of spreading thin-set straight onto plywood, we float a thick bed of sand and cement mortar, screed it flat and set the tile into it. It takes longer, and it is one of the most solid bases you can put under tile.

What is included

Tile, Slab Tile & Mud Set Floors, start to finish

  • Large-format and slab tile

Big porcelain tiles and thin slab panels on floors and walls, with leveling systems and full mortar coverage so every edge sits flush.

  • Mud set floors

A hand-floated sand and cement mortar bed that corrects out-of-level floors and gives tile a thick, rigid base that does not bounce.

  • Mud set shower pans

Custom-sloped shower floors built from mortar over a waterproof liner or membrane, shaped to your drain and your shower size.

  • Shower walls and niches

Waterproofed backer board or membrane, tiled walls, built-in niches and benches, with clean cuts and consistent grout joints.

  • Kitchen backsplashes

Subway, mosaic, zellige-style and slab backsplashes, with neat cuts around outlets, windows and cabinet ends.

  • Floor tile in any room

Entryways, mudrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens and bathrooms, with subfloor stiffening or a mud bed when the room needs it.

Built for New England homes

Many older homes in Woburn and the surrounding towns have floors that dip, slope and bounce. Old joists have settled, and some bathrooms have been redone two or three times over the years. That is exactly where a mud set earns its keep: the mortar bed can be built thicker in the low spots, so the finished tile comes out flat even when the framing underneath is not.

Winter here means cold floors, dry heat and salt and slush tracked through the entryway. Porcelain handles all of it, and it pairs well with radiant floor heat. In showers, steamy winters and poorly vented bathrooms are hard on anything that is not waterproofed properly, so we treat the waterproofing layer as the most important part of the job, not an extra.

How it works

Our tile, slab tile & mud set floors process

01

Look at the base and estimate

We check the subfloor or walls for flex, flatness and moisture, talk through tile size and layout, and give you a clear written estimate that includes the prep.

02

Build the base

Depending on the job, that means stiffening the floor, installing backer board and waterproofing, or floating a full mud bed or shower pan.

03

Layout and set

We dry-lay and plan the layout so cuts land where you will not notice them, then set the tile with full coverage and leveling where needed.

04

Grout, seal and walkthrough

Grout goes in, joints get cleaned and sealed where the material calls for it, and we walk the finished tile with you before we leave.

Tile, Slab Tile & Mud Set Floors: common questions

A mud set floor is tile set into a thick bed of sand and cement mortar that is floated and screeded flat by hand. It is a strong choice for out-of-level floors, large tiles and shower pans. For a flat, stiff subfloor, a standard thin-set install over backer board can work fine. We tell you which one your room needs.
Big tiles show every high and low spot as a lip at the edge. They need a very flat base, full mortar coverage and careful handling. That extra prep is what makes them look clean instead of uneven.
Costs vary with tile size and material, the layout, how much base prep the floor or shower needs and whether it is a mud set. Large-format and mosaic work take more labor than standard tile. We give you a written estimate after seeing the space.
It is sometimes possible, but we rarely recommend it. It adds height, and any cracks or loose tiles underneath can carry through to the new floor. Removing the old tile lets us check and fix the base.
Yes. We build mud set shower pans sloped to the drain over a waterproof liner or membrane, sized for your shower, including curbless and walk-in layouts when the framing allows it.
It depends on the mortar and grout used and on whether there is a mud bed, which needs time to cure. We give you clear timing for walking on the floor and using the shower before we finish.
